Book or Business Part VI: Writers Conference(s)

Last weekend I attended my first International Writers Conference - Killer Nashville in Franklin, Tennessee. I was blown away by the professionalism and approachability of the conference staff, panelists, and my fellow writers and authors in attendance.

Over the course of my military, academic, private sector careers, I have attended numerous conferences. As an introvert, I find them daunting and draining, and I generally gravitate towards observing and taking notes unless I absolutely have to speak.

"Killer Nashville"  was the first conference where I felt (almost) at home.  The atmosphere was one of support and growth (and not of pontification, put-downs, or salesmanship).  Everyone there was incredibly positive and helpful, which I found both encouraging and energizing.

Some of the key messages and takeaways from the 1.5 days I spent there:

  1. The value of being part of a writing community.  Writing can be lonely.  The people I encountered at Killer Nashville reminded me that I am not alone - that there are others like me out there who are juggling life and working on their craft when they can.

  2. Rejection (and moving past it)  is a rite of passage for all writers / authors

  3. “Don’t let people who haven’t tried tell you you can’t.” - Great quote from a speaker at the awards dinner (which was a class act, by the way).

  4. Another favorite quote from a guest speaker: “Write (boldly) like Kirk, edit like Spock.”

  5. The value of reading outside one’s comfort zone - reading in other genres from time to time can be fun and illuminating.

  6. The best stories and books come from an authentic place inside us (and book reviewers can tell the difference).

  7. The importance of giving back to the “authoring” community as we progress.

  8. And finally - never give up! (a constant theme with the guest speakers and panelists)

In general, my experience at Killer Nashville gave me momentum to finish my second book and inspired me to give back to other writers as I learn and grow.  I look forward to attending and perhaps giving back  in 2024.
